🔙 Previous: Tokyo Survival Guide (3 Days)
Did you enjoy the neon jungle? Now, let’s escape to nature. But be careful, Hakone is an Active Volcano Zone!
🛑 Stop! Don’t buy a regular train ticket!
Hakone is a “Vehicle Paradise”. You will ride a Train, Cable Car, Ropeway, and Pirate Ship. If you pay separately, you lose money and time. You need a “Magic Pass”.

I am Hachi-Sensei!
Most tourists drag their luggage and suffer. Don’t be like them! Check my “Luggage Strategy” below.
📊 Hakone Stats Dashboard

💀 My Biggest Mistake!
Years ago, I brought a large suitcase onto the Hakone Tozan Train. It was packed, and my bag hit everyone. It was a disaster.
👉 Lesson: Use the “Luggage Carry Service” at Hakone-Yumoto Station!
🗺️ Select Your Mission
🎫 Mission: Get the “Fuji-Hakone Pass”
Are you going to Mt. Fuji (Kawaguchiko) after Hakone?
If yes, the standard “Hakone Freepass” is NOT enough. You need the “Fuji-Hakone Pass” (3-Day Ticket).
🆚 Price Comparison (All Routes 2026)
You MUST pick up the physical pass at Shinjuku Station (Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center).
Warning: You cannot redeem this Klook voucher at Odawara or Hakone. Pick it up in Tokyo BEFORE you leave!
🌋 Quest 1: The Volcano Loop
Hakone is famous for its “Golden Loop”. But first, solve the luggage problem.
- 🕙 10:00 – Hakone-Yumoto: Arrival. Drop your bags at “Hakone Carry Service” (Counter on 1F). Don’t carry them! (~¥1,700/bag)
- 🚂 10:30 – Tozan Train: Ride the red train up the mountain. (Switchback!)
- 🚠 11:30 – Cable Car: Transfer at Gora to Sounzan.
- 🚡 12:00 – Ropeway to Owakudani: Fly over the “Hell Valley” (Sulfur gas).
- 🥚 12:30 – Lunch: Eat the Black Egg (Mission!)
- 🚢 14:00 – Pirate Ship: Cross Lake Ashi. See Mt. Fuji.
- 🚌 16:00 – Bus to Gora: Go back to check in at your hotel.
- 👘 17:00 – Ryokan Life: Change into Yukata. Relax.
- 🍱 18:00 – Kaiseki Dinner: Traditional Japanese Feast.
- ♨️ 20:00 – Onsen: Soak in the hot spring under the stars.
▼ 10:30 – Tozan Train (The Red Climber)

Why ride this? It is Japan’s steepest mountain railway. It zig-zags up the mountain (Switchback system). The red body looks beautiful in the green forest.
▼ 11:30 – Cable Car (Straight Up)

Why ride this? Transfer at Gora Station. This cable car pulls you straight up the steep slope to Sounzan. Hold on tight!
▼ 12:00 – Ropeway (Sky Walk)

Why ride this? Now we fly. Look down—that is “Owakudani” (The Great Boiling Valley). You can see yellow sulfur smoke rising from the ground. It smells like rotten eggs, but the view is epic.
🏆 Mission: Eat the Black Egg!
In Owakudani, buy the “Kuro-Tamago” (Black Egg). It is boiled in volcanic hot spring water, turning the shell black.

Legend: Eating ONE egg adds 7 years to your life.
Warning: Do not eat more than 2, or you might invite bad luck! (And it’s too much cholesterol!)
▼ 14:00 – Pirate Ship (Lake Ashi)

Why go here? It looks like a fantasy movie. Ride the ship from “Togendai” to “Motohakone-ko”.
The View: On a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji reflected on the water. It is iconic. Use your Pass to ride for free!
🚌 Day Trip from Tokyo?

Hakone food is delicious, but be careful of the “Meat Trap” if you are vegetarian.
🔥 Warm Pot Dishes (e.g. Tofu Katsuni)

Famous “Tofu Katsuni” (at Ginkatsu-tei) is delicious.
Warning for Vegans: It looks vegetarian (Tofu), but it usually contains minced pork inside and egg. Be careful!

Because you stayed overnight, you can beat the Tokyo day-trippers. Let’s move fast.
The red gate in the lake (Hakone Shrine).
Why so early? At 11:00 AM, the queue is 1 hour long. At 8:30 AM, it is almost empty. Take your time for the perfect shot.
(Access: Bus from Gora Station to Motohakone-ko takes about 35 mins)

🎨 Optional: The Open-Air Museum
“Art in the Forest.”
If you have time before leaving, visit Japan’s most popular museum. The “Symphonic Sculpture” (Stained Glass Tower) is stunning.
- 📍 Location: Chokoku-no-mori Stn (Near Gora).
- ⏰ Time needed: 1.5 hours.
- 📸 Photo Op: Stained Glass Tower.
Before you leave, grab some snacks at the station area.
Must Buy: “Castella Manju” (Video-famous cakes) and dried fish snacks.
To Mt. Fuji: Bus from Yumoto to Odawara, then Bus to Kawaguchiko.
To Kyoto: Train to Odawara, then Shinkansen.
⚠️ Hakone Survival Guide: 8 Iron Rules
1. 💴 Cash is GOD
Rural Japan still loves cash. Coin lockers and small shops need coins. Carry 20,000+ JPY.
2. ♨️ Onsen Manners (Naked Rule)
No swimsuits allowed in traditional Onsen. Wash your body before entering the tub. Keep your towel out of the water.
3. 📶 Connectivity
Mountain signals can be weak. Google Maps is essential for bus schedules.
4. 🚌 The “5 PM” Trap
Warning: Buses and Ropeways in Hakone stop early (around 17:00). Taxis are rare and expensive. Don’t get stuck on the mountain!
5. 🦁 Wrong Bus Trap (Important!)
Warning: The “Fuji-Hakone Pass” is valid for Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Bus (Red/Orange T logo). It is NOT valid for “Izuhakone Bus” (Lion Mark 🦁). Check the logo before you ride!
6. 🛅 Baggage Carry Service
Don’t drag suitcases on the mountain train. Use “Hakone Carry Service” at Yumoto Station. They deliver bags to your hotel (until 12:30 PM). Cost: ~¥1,700/bag.
7. 🍽️ Dinner Refugee Crisis
Restaurants close at 17:00. Only convenience stores remain open. Booking a hotel with dinner is highly recommended.
8. 😷 Volcanic Gas
If you have asthma or heart problems, avoid Owakudani. The sulfur gas can be strong and dangerous.
☔ FAQ: What if it rains?
Q. It’s raining. Is Hakone ruined?
Not at all! Hakone has great indoor spots. Here is your backup plan:
- Hakone Open-Air Museum: Many galleries are indoors (Picasso Pavilion).
- Yunessun: A hot spring theme park where you can swim in Coffee/Wine baths (swimsuit needed).
- Okada Museum of Art: Huge collection of Asian art with a foot bath cafe.
- Stay in Onsen: Honestly, listening to rain while soaking in an open-air bath is the most relaxing thing ever.
✅ Quest Complete!
You have soaked in the Onsen and conquered the Loop.
Now, choose your next destination.
💡 Hachi’s Advice:
If you have the “Fuji-Hakone Pass”, take the bus to Mt. Fuji.
If not, take the Shinkansen from Odawara Station directly to Kyoto!
