Important 2026 Update: “Tsuruga Transfer” Survival Guide
Due to the Shinkansen extension, the route has slightly changed. Don’t trust old blogs from 2023! You must transfer at Tsuruga Station to switch between the Shinkansen and the Express Train.
⚠️ The “8-Minute” Transfer Rule
Many trains only give you 8 to 10 minutes to transfer. Tsuruga station is HUGE (3 floors high). Here is how you survive:
- 🛑 The Elevator Trap: If you see a line for the elevator, SKIP IT. It is too slow. Use the escalator if you can manage your luggage.

🎫 The Transfer Gate: You will pass through a “Transfer Gate” inside the station.
(Tip: Insert your Magnetic Pass. It will pop out at the other end. Don’t forget to take it!) - Hachi’s Safety Tip: If you have kids or huge bags, book a connection with 20+ minutes transfer time. Don’t run. You are on vacation.
Don’t just transfer. Stop at Kanazawa! It is before Tsuruga. Stay a night, eat gold-leaf ice cream, and travel to Osaka the next day stress-free.
How to Buy & Exchange (Step-by-Step)
Buying online is easy, but “exchanging” it for a physical ticket scares people. Don’t panic. Follow these 4 steps.
Step 1: Buy Online (Secure Rate)
Buy on Klook to lock in the currency rate. You will receive a QR Code instantly.
Step 2: Find the “Green Machine”
At the station (Narita Airport or Tokyo Station), find the Ticket Machine with a Passport Icon.
Step 3: Scan & Type
- Change Language to English (Top Right).
- Press the “Read QR Code” button on the screen.
- Scan your QR Code from your phone.
- Scan your Passport (Identity page) on the reader.
The machine will spit out a Small Magnetic Ticket.
This is your “Pass”. You must insert this small ticket into the ticket gates to enter. You cannot use the QR code on your phone to ride trains!
Step 4: Reserve Seats (Free!)
Once you have the magnetic ticket, insert it back into the machine and press “Reserve Seat”. You can choose your seat for free. Don’t forget to grab your seat ticket!
⚠️ Luggage Hack & Food
When reserving your seat, try to select the LAST ROW of the car (e.g., Row 15). There is usually a small space behind the seat where you can squeeze a suitcase.
🍱 Don’t Starve: The train ride is long. Buy an “Ekiben” (Station Bento Box) at Tokyo Station before you board. The “Beef Tongue Bento” is my recommendation!
